Afraid Of Injections? - Cost Effective Painless Injections Are Here

Painless-injection-microneedle

If you are the one haunted by thought of getting an injection from the doctor or more worst, a diabetic patient, here is a good news for you.

A group of researchers from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, developed needles that are less than 1 mm in size. It can be used to administer drug painlessly into one's body.

Its Development:

The group fabricated a hollow Carbon microneedle array with flow channels using a conventional C-MEMS process.
The needles were initially developed from SU-8, which is a photosensitive polymer, in the year 2018 but were brittle and non-biocompatible. To overcome this, they were modified by a process of pyrolysis. It resulted in glassy carbon needles which were almost 300 times stronger than the originals. Being made of carbon, they were also biocompatible. Pyrolysis at 900 degree Celsius for around 60 minutes eliminated most of Nitrogen and Oxygen in the polymer.

Microneedle array was inserted into Mouse skin and withdrawn to examine the mechanical interaction of the microneedles with skin. It was found that the microneedles remain intact after retraction over multiple cycles when penetrated through the skin of the animal.

Future perspectives:

The team is now working on the development of controlled Drug Delivery System including micropumps, a drug reservoir, and microneedles with the aim of developing a cost effective system to deliver drugs to the patient in painless and precise manner.
This will particularly be helpful for diabetic patients while administering insulin on a regular basis. Though it doesn't cut the rates of insulin but can decrease the device price by almost 50%.

Can Rahul Gandhi's resignation revive the Congress Party?

About 8.3 crores new voter voted in the last Lok Sabha elections, myself being one among them. So, as far as I learnt and know about the recent past of the Congress party, I would say it would be hard.. very hard for resuscitating the party once again considering Rahul Gandhi’s resignation as well. Rahul Gandhi has been the President of the party since quite some years, but now he finally decided to step down after his resignation letter was turned down by the working committee some months back. The party has just lost its charms. With all those allegations of scam on several top class leaders of the party, and less or no improvement in the grass root level workers, have even deteriorated the places which were known to be the stronghold of Congress. The recent defeat of Rahul Gandhi in the hands of Smriti Irani indicates the same. There were several states where congress’s list remained null in the elections for Lok Sabha 2019. On the other hand, what I have seen in the case of...

Dear 17th Prime Minister ... [2/2]

The Game of Thrones has begun and Indians are gearing to choose their next Prime Minister in a month. In the previous blog, I jotted down some points that We, the People of India, expect from our representative. This blog is a continuation of the previous blog. Following are few of the segments that, given good attention, will result in an all round development of our nation.  In case you missed the 1st part, Read: Dear 17th Prime Minister ... [1/2] Sports "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy " - we came across this phrase a lot during childhood. In fact, with predominance of young Indian population in the country having lot of energy and potential contained within them, it is the perfect time to fetch maximum output with much lesser input. Indian runner Hima das, winning a gold medal in an international sprint event exemplifies the future prospective of sports in India. The northeastern part of India is a natural pool of budding sportsmen who with prope...

Plastic : A Boon with an Inherent Bane

Plastic, since its inception has taken each and every corner of the world by storm. We sleep while being surrounded by it and when we wake up, 80% of us check our smartphones (which of course are made mostly of plastic components) even before stepping out of the bed. While we move around in the day, we will increasingly notice the prevalence of plastic in our daily lives. Plastic has become an inevitable component within the mankind for sure, which surely would have been great only if it was devoid of some inherent difficulties and inconveniences. Plastic is a word that originally meant “pliable and easily shaped.” It recently became a name for the category of materials called polymers. The word polymer means “of many parts” and polymers are made of long chains of molecules. Brief History: In the early days, packaging and storage materials were predominantly of metals, glass or other durable materials. As time passed, there arose need of a cheaper alternative that can be ma...
