Social Media: Its Impact on People's Lives

social-media-impact-on-voting-behaviour
Social media has undoubtedly changed the way we used to live before its existence. Whether it is a Happy Birthday wish or just a random ping, social media has got us covered. We used to travel several thousand miles away just to get a glimpse of someone (and yeah, we obviously missed the comfort of our homes). Now everything is possible with the click of a button. We can connect to someone located far away both verbally and visually. The ‘thing’ has been around us since last some years and during all these years we have surrounded ourselves with so much of them that they are always omnipresent among us.
From dawn till dusk and till the midnight until we sleep, we constantly keep ourselves updated with the latest trends around us. A strange satisfaction and peace of mind is felt sharing everything we do to ourselves. A visit to the mall or travelling to somewhere which makes us click pictures will eventually find their way to Facebook timeline or Instagram stories. Social media is something that gives us company in some (boring) family gatherings where we found ourselves grounded to the internet in general and Social Media in particular.

A man is known by the company he keeps – we heard it a lot since our childhood. Infact, Social Media is perhaps the best company that one can have these days. Children or adult or old or young, almost everyone has got their profile updated on some Social Media platforms. Even the introverts hardly interacting with the people around them spend a lot of time chatting with their friends in the virtual world.
So, is it not possible for something into which we have got ourselves involved so much to play around with our thought process? - Yes, it is indeed very much possible.
Social Media has become a safe haven for targeting a specific group of people. Circulated propagandas and fake news especially designed to manipulate one’s thought process has very serious repercussions if they find their way onto a common platform being used by everyone.
There are reports of massive data leaks in Social Media platforms that have even helped in changing people’s mindset and consequently their voting behaviour resulting in the change in mandate. Especially during the elections season, we come across age old video clips and images that are projected in a new way to push forward a specific message along with it. An image or message might go viral in few seconds if it matches the interest of a specific group of people even if no credible reference is available for checking its authenticity. Blind shares and engagements on such unauthenticated posts has always been the major reason for their widespread dispersion.
With technologies advancing in rapid strides, it has become even much difficult to deal with such misguiding texts and images. However, due to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, the tech giants are trying their best in combating the menace, but a lot has to be done yet. Unaware internet users and blind faith on the contents received on Social Media further deepens the problem.

Human body is well equipped with organs that are capable enough to make at least an intelligent guess about the correctness of something. Yet, we have allowed the human curated softwares and applications to play around with our thought process which is really sad. Furthur, being equipped with latest technologies like smartphones and cheap data, a quick Google search will settle anything right away. We cannot, in any way as concerned citizens, allow our thought process be manipulated by targeted propagandas that might lead to serious degradation of national interests in near future.

Can Rahul Gandhi's resignation revive the Congress Party?

About 8.3 crores new voter voted in the last Lok Sabha elections, myself being one among them. So, as far as I learnt and know about the recent past of the Congress party, I would say it would be hard.. very hard for resuscitating the party once again considering Rahul Gandhi’s resignation as well. Rahul Gandhi has been the President of the party since quite some years, but now he finally decided to step down after his resignation letter was turned down by the working committee some months back. The party has just lost its charms. With all those allegations of scam on several top class leaders of the party, and less or no improvement in the grass root level workers, have even deteriorated the places which were known to be the stronghold of Congress. The recent defeat of Rahul Gandhi in the hands of Smriti Irani indicates the same. There were several states where congress’s list remained null in the elections for Lok Sabha 2019. On the other hand, what I have seen in the case of...

Masood Azhar: Global Terrorist. What's next?

Masood Azhar, the mastermind behind the Pulwama attack, has finally been designated a global terrorist by the United Nations. Earlier attempts to blacklist him were unsuccessful, owing to China blocking the proposals. However, in what is seen as a diplomatic victory for India, the Jaish-e-Mohammad chief is now a global terrorist, a culmination of efforts by a number of countries viz., India, France, US, UK among others. So, what does it mean for India? More importantly, what does it mean for Masood Azhar and Pakistan? When someone is identified as a global terrorist by the sanctions committee in the UN, a number of restrictions are imposed on the said entity. The measures include: Asset freeze: All or any of the assets of the designated individuals or entities are required to be frozen by the member states of UN. The basic idea is to dry out the funds that sponsor terrorism. Travel ban: The UN member states are required to deny passage to the designated entities through the...

It's NOT Cool, It Kills - "World No Tobacco Day" Special

We all had at-least once came across that pre-movie ad featuring Mukesh, who suffers and dies because of his chewing addiction. Every packet of cigarette and chewing tobacco comes with statutory warning signs, but it is indeed an unfortunate affair that India accounts for more than 12% of the world’s smokers.  Smoking cannabis has been in existence in India since 2000 B.C. Tobacco was introduced in India in 17th century and this mingled up with the existing habit of cannabis smoking. Since then, numbers of smokers and tobacco chewers in India have increased with leaps and bounds. More than 10 million people are dying each year due to tobacco related illnesses. More than 36,000 men died in the year 2012 due to oral cancer of which a major portion was due to consumption of tobacco products.  There are many factors promoting the consumption of tobacco. One among them is the film industry. They often showcase the good guys consuming tobacco products (mostly cigars). As per...
